The Terrestrial Planets

from £33.00

The Terrestrial Planets - part of my planets series.

A tetraptych (or quadriptych) print of my illustrations of the four terrestrial (or rocky) planets in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.

Mercury, the first planet in our solar system. This print shows the landscape of Mercury, one of the most cratered places our solar system and closest planet to the sun. It also shows the Mariner 10, the first space craft to visit Mercury, sent by NASA, which arrived there on the 29th March 1974.

Venus, the second planet in our solar system. This print shows the landscape of Venus, which is the most volcanic known planet. It also shows the Venera 7, a Soviet spacecraft, which was the first probe mankind sent to the green planet on 15th December 1970, and also became the first spacecraft to soft land on another planet and the first to transmit data from there back to Earth. Alas it didn’t last very long before the atmosphere destroyed it (23 minutes in fact).

The Earth, well you all know Earth right, you pretty much all live there... except the 11 people currently on board the international space station. This print shows the international space station, which the first section was started on 20th November 1998. The project involved five space agencies: the United States' NASA, Russia's Roscosmos, Japan's JAXA, Europe's ESA, and Canada's CSA, and has cost approximately 150 billion USD.

Mars, the fourth planet in our solar system, the red planet and the most likely place that could support life. This print shows the robotic rover Opportunity which landed on Mars on the 24th January 2004, and was active until mid-2018, 57 times its originally designed lifespan. Sadly in that time it found no signs of life.

All four also feature classical references (Ancient Greece and Rome plus the Zodiac)and some unusual fictional characters, can you spot them all?
